The 6 Face Shapes and the Haircuts That Suit Them

How to recognize each shape, which cuts flatter it and what to skip.

Oval Face Shape

How to spot it:
Length about 1.5× the width, forehead a little wider than the jaw, rounded chin.
Best haircuts:
Almost anything: pixies, blunt bobs, long layers, curtain bangs; for men, quiffs, side parts and buzz cuts.
Skip:
Very heavy, long bangs that hide your proportions.

Round Face Shape

How to spot it:
Length and width nearly equal, full cheeks, soft jaw.
Best haircuts:
Long layers, a lob below the chin, side parts, asymmetrical pixies; for men, volume on top with a quiff or faux hawk.
Skip:
Chin-length rounded bobs, blunt full bangs, flat sides with no height.

Square Face Shape

How to spot it:
Forehead, cheekbones and jaw about the same width, sharp jaw corners.
Best haircuts:
Wavy shags, curtain bangs, butterfly layers, soft waves; for men, crew cuts, buzz cuts and textured crops that show off the jaw.
Skip:
Blunt cuts that end exactly at the jaw, severe center parts.

Heart Face Shape

How to spot it:
Wide forehead and cheekbones, narrow jaw, pointed chin.
Best haircuts:
Chin-length bobs, side-swept or curtain bangs, waves from the jaw down; for men, medium length with a side part or fringe.
Skip:
Lots of volume at the crown, slicked-back styles that expose the whole forehead.

Long Face Shape

How to spot it:
Face length clearly the biggest measurement, straight sides.
Best haircuts:
Bangs, chin-length bobs, soft waves with width; for men, crew cuts, Caesar cuts and side parts without much height.
Skip:
Very long straight hair with no layers, tall pompadours.

Diamond Face Shape

How to spot it:
Widest at the cheekbones, narrow forehead and jaw, defined chin.
Best haircuts:
Pixies with side-swept bangs, layered lobs, curtain bangs, chin-length volume; for men, textured fringes and messy crops.
Skip:
Slicked-back styles and tight sides that add width at the cheekbones.

How to Determine Your Face Shape With a Tape Measure

No photo handy? Take four measurements in front of a mirror with a soft tape, then compare them with the table.

  1. 1Forehead: measure across the widest part of your forehead, about halfway between your brows and hairline.
  2. 2Cheekbones: measure across the most prominent points of your cheekbones, just below the outer corners of your eyes.
  3. 3Jawline: measure from the tip of your chin to the corner of your jaw below your ear, then double it.
  4. 4Face length: measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin.

Tips for an Accurate Face Shape Result

Most wrong results come from the photo, not the face.

  1. 1Hold the camera at eye level. Shooting from below makes the jaw look wider; from above, the forehead.
  2. 2Look straight ahead. Even a slight head turn narrows one side of the face.
  3. 3Pull your hair back. The detector needs to see your forehead, temples and jawline.
  4. 4Skip wide-angle selfies. Step back and zoom in a little, or use the back camera, to avoid lens distortion.
  5. 5Keep a neutral expression. A big smile widens the cheeks and lifts the jaw.
  6. 6Try two photos. If the results differ, read both shapes in the guide above; many faces are a mix.
